Hanging Stuffed Animals and Deodorizers1991
Mike Kelly's work questions 'normative' values, looking at all of the fixed ideas about childhood, sexuality, gender, region, education and so on. He has been influenced by history, politics and underground rock music (he was in a band with tony Oursler). 'Extracurricular Activity Projective Reconstruction' is a collection that features many of these works dealing with deformity. He seems to dislike the ideals of this generation/popular culture so his disfigured sculptures and paintings are him expressing this dislike. He describes himself as an avant-gardist so i think he feels hes stuck in the wrong generation?
"so were living in the post-modern age; the death of the avant-garde. so all i can do now really is work with this dominant culture and flay it, rip it apart, configure it."
